The allure of lightened skin has been fashionable for centuries.  In the past, it was considered a status symbol to have pale skin, and people went to great lengths to achieve it.  Recently light skin has been trending not as a symbol of status but of skin health.

How can I lighten my skin in a week? Lightening your skin is something that takes time and could be harmful if rushed improperly.  While you won’t see milky pure white skin in a week, you can see noticeable changes, using the correct procedures and materials.  Using items like lemons, yogurt, and honey in a mask form can help your efforts.  You may also turn to one of the many skin lightening creams on the market.

When attempting to lighten your skin, it is important to remember most treatments are for spot treatment, not whole face lightening.  Because of this, the results you expect may not be what you see.

How to Quickly Lighten Your Skin

Now that you have learned some of the long-term care tips, you are probably looking for some quicker ways to lighten your skin.  While there are several at home remedies that have been useful for many, you must choose what is best for you.

When choosing any type of home remedy, proceed with caution and make sure you spot test before covering your entire face.

The good news is there are several inexpensive home remedies, most of which you probably have around your house now or can easily find at your local grocery store. When using food items, it is beneficial to use as many organic products as possible.

  • Lemon
  • Raw Honey
  • Yogurt
  • Gram flour
  • Aloe
  • Cucumber
  • Turmeric

Lemon

When using lemon, it is important to remember this is an extremely acidic fruit. Therefore your skin may have a reaction and become irritated.  Lemon juice is highly acidic, which aids in the bleaching effect it has on your skin. The high acidity is also why it is not recommended to use this method frequently.

Studies have shown the effectiveness of lemon juice, but they have also determined the effects may not be lasting and will, therefore, need to be a part of your regime if you want lasting effects. It is not recommended to use this method more than two times a week because of the irritation it can cause.

If you choose to use this method, you will need to use fresh lemons.  Don’t try to use a bottle of lemon juice that you can buy on the shelf. It is not the same purity and won’t be as helpful.

To use lemon, squeeze the juice into a dish and use a soft cloth or cotton ball to rub the juice over your skin gently.  Let the juice sit and then wash it away with a gentle cleanser. The lemon will help brighten your skin after several uses.

The application of lemon juice can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so use caution when spending time in the sun after using this method of lightening and be sure to use a quality sunscreen.

Raw Honey

You can use honey mixed with yogurt and lemon juice to create a face mask. The properties in each of these items will allow your skin to lighten gently. Honey is known to kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria, so while it may not solely lighten your skin, it will help slough away dead skin cells that make your skin appear darkened.

Again, when choosing this mask, you will want to use juice from a real lemon and raw honey. Raw honey is a bit more costly, but it is in its most natural form, meaning it hasn’t been pasteurized and processed prior to bottling.

Using approximately 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 teaspoon of lemon juice and mix together. Apply the mask and allow it to sit for 10-15 minutes.  Wash your face with a gentle cleanser when finished. You can use this application 2-3 times a week if no sensitivity is noticed.  The use of sunscreen will also be important because of the lemon juice.

Yogurt

Why does yogurt have skin lighting properties? Its because it contains lactic acid which helps reduce skin pigmentation.

Now, this isn’t the time to pull out your favorite flavor. You need to use plain Greek yogurt. Gently massage the yogurt into your skin and allow it to sit for several minutes. Greek yogurt is the most useful for this mask because of the consistency. While you can use other forms of yogurt, it will tend to run off your face.

After applying the yogurt, you will leave it on for 15-20 minutes before washing away.  You may feel your skin tighten a bit as the yogurt dries.  Also, make sure you wash your hair if the yogurt happens to touch your hairline. The last thing you want is to smell like sour milk.

When the 20 minutes are up, wash away with a mild cleanser.  You can use the mask daily if you wish. Milk has hydrating properties, so it will help plump your skin as well as give it a natural glow.

Aloe

You are probably familiar with aloe plants with their long, green spikes and often used to treat burns or other skin irritations. Aloe is an extremely gentle yet helpful substance to use on your skin. Aloe is known for its antioxidant effect.  It provides relief from skin irritation such as acne or dry skin and can offer hydration to your skin. Because of the gentleness, this can be used twice a day, morning, and night.

If you are using an actual aloe plant, be sure to wash the leaf prior to extracting the aloe, this will ensure harmful pesticides aren’t getting absorbed into your skin. Not everyone will have access to a live aloe plant, and if this is the case, you can purchase pure aloe vera gel. Again, focus on purchasing an organic ingredient to avoid harmful chemicals.

Aloe doesn’t require any extra steps of mixing. You will simply apply a thin layer of aloe over your entire face, leave it on for 10 minutes, and rinse off.  If you want a refreshing mask in the summer, chill the aloe in the refrigerator before using it.

Cucumber

You may be familiar with using cucumber slices on your eyes to reduce puffiness. While cucumber slices are great, they won’t cover your entire face. To use cucumber for a mask, you need to begin by blending a cucumber in a regular household blender. Before blending the cucumber, be sure to wash it thoroughly and peel it. It would be best to use organic cucumbers for this mask as well.

After blending, you need to drain the juice from the pulp and apply the juice to your face. Allow the juice to sit for approximately 25 minutes before removing it from your skin. Cucumber is very gentle, so this treatment can be used daily.

Accrording to a article published by the International Journal of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Science cucumber helps tighten and firm and hydrate your skin and helps to whiten and  brighten the appearance of your skin.

Turmeric

Turmeric is an amazing anti-inflammatory and there is evidence that it can be used to help lighten your skin.  A huge word of caution when using turmeric. It is a beautiful goldenrod color, and it can easily stain anything it meets, including your skin. You can purchase turmeric in most stores, but it is not all the same. It would be wise to visit an organic market to purchase pure turmeric powder.

To use turmeric, you will need to mix the powder (1 tsp.) with lemon or lime juice (3 Tbsp).  Apply the paste to your skin and let sit for 15 minutes.  Gently cleanse your skin with either a liquid toner or cool water. This mask is relatively gentle, so you can use it 3-4 times each week.

Because turmeric stains easily, be sure to use old towels or washcloths and scrub your hands to remove the yellowing from your nails.  You may also notice a slight yellowing of your skin after removing the mask.  This will fade away within a few hours. If you don’t have a few hours for the color to fade, you can try to use almond or coconut oil to cleanse the staining away.

Please Note: Individuals with skin sensitivities will want to do a skin sensitivity test before, apply a small amount of any new product to your skin.

How Long Does It Take to See a Difference?

Lightening your skin is not something that can be safely accomplished overnight.  You have to remember that the damage you are trying to reverse took time to get there, it wasn’t overnight. Therefore, patience is really important when beginning the lightening process.  You also need to be prepared to maintain the upkeep of your skin once it is at it’s desired lightness, meaning continued use of the mask or cream you choose.

If you are looking to lighten your skin, you likely have significant damage from environmental or physical factors. If the darkening is caused by physical factors, you may need to overhaul your lifestyle, which will take time.

Although lightening your skin will take a considerable amount of time, you will be able to see small changes within a few days, especially if you include healthy lifestyle changes as well. The first thing you will likely notice is brighter and smoother skin. This is due to the exfoliating and hydrating properties of many of the masks listed above. If you continue the process, others will begin to notice the changes as well.

What Are Other Lightening Options?

If the natural food products aren’t going to provide the results you are looking for quick enough, you can always seek the advice of the dermatologist. They may be able to offer a prescription that will work more rapidly.

Healthy Diet Can Help Lighten Skin

It may not come as a surprise to you, but a healthy diet can influence the health of your skin, including the lightness of it. If you are looking for a quick fix, overhauling your diet won’t produce overnight results but can provide excellent long-term results.

What Should I Eat?

To truly lighten and improve your skin, it begins from the inside out.  Make sure you are consuming foods high in vitamins A, C, and E. These are often found in fruits and vegetables.

Drink enough water. It is recommended by the Mayo Clinic, that you drink at least 15.5 cups (men) or 11.5 cups (women) each day.  Water provides the hydration your skin needs to remain healthy. As with anything, you may wish to discuss your individual water needs with a physician, as many factors will influence the amount you need each day.

Follow a Consistent Skincare Routine

As with anything, consistency is key, especially when it comes to skin health.  Three things you can do to help your skin long-term are;

  1. Wear sunscreen daily, even if it isn’t sunny.
  2. Cleanse and moisturize your face 2X a day.
  3. Exfoliate 1-2X a week

Is Skin Lightening Right for Me?
